Buying guide

How to choose a bar soap

A few things worth knowing before you buy — so your soap actually cleans without stripping or drying your skin.

What makes a good natural bar soap?

Look for real, recognisable oils and butters — olive, coconut, shea, cocoa — and added glycerine (or a cold-process soap that keeps its own). The best bars clean gently without that tight, squeaky 'stripped' feeling. Long ingredient lists full of sulfates, synthetic fragrance and hardeners are the sign of a cheap, drying bar.

Is bar soap better than liquid body wash?

For most people, yes — and it's far better for the planet. A good bar lasts longer, needs little or no plastic packaging, and skips the water and preservatives that fill a bottle of body wash. The one exception is very dry or eczema-prone skin, which sometimes prefers a syndet (soap-free) bar or a cream cleanser.

Will soap dry out my skin?

A harsh, high-pH bar can. A well-made natural soap — especially a superfatted or shea-rich one — leaves enough oils behind to keep skin comfortable. If your skin feels tight after washing, switch to a gentler, oil-rich bar (our top picks all qualify) and moisturise while still damp.

How much should a good bar of soap cost?

$6–$15 buys an excellent natural bar from most of the makers here. Under $6 you can still find honest, simple soaps. Above $25 you're paying for a luxury house, triple-milling and fragrance artistry — lovely as a treat or gift, more than everyday skin needs.

How do I make a bar of soap last longer?

Keep it out of standing water. A draining soap dish or a soap-saver pad lets the bar dry between uses, which can double its life. Cold-process and triple-milled bars are naturally harder and longer-lasting than soft melt-and-pour soaps.

How we rank — and why you can trust it

Every soap is bought with our own money and assessed against the same five criteria. We don't take payment for placement, and we keep the honest downsides in.

01

Ingredients & purity

Quality of the oils and butters, added glycerine, and how clean and transparent the formula is — palm-free, sulfate-free, plastic-free where possible.

02

Lather & cleansing

A rich, creamy lather that cleans thoroughly without stripping, and rinses clean without residue.

03

Skin-feel

How skin feels after washing — soft and comfortable rather than tight or dry — across normal, dry and sensitive skin.

04

Scent & experience

Natural, well-balanced fragrance (or a good unscented option), and how pleasant the bar is to use day to day.

05

Value & longevity

How long the bar lasts and how it cleans, measured against the price — not the brand name.
